The Institut francais is responsible for promoting and distributing French films and documentaries abroad, by request of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. For this purpose, the Institur français has established a Cinema department, with an exceptional portfolio of 600 films and 3,000 documentaries, together with 1,500 titles from the African Cinema Library.
On the strength of this particularly rich catalogue, the Cinema department aims to promote all the many and varied aspects of the cinema, both in France and abroad, by adopting a non-commercial distribution policy and organising major events such as retrospectives of the careers of Jacques Tati and Juliette Binoche (In-I / Jubilations programme) or, indeed, the Cinemas of the South Pavilion at Cannes.
The Cinema department is also responsible for cinema and audiovisual events organised under the banner of the Cultural Seasons.
The department also provides support to young documentary film-makers, with the Louis Lumière Grant, managed by the Residences unit.
