Après nous le déluge : Discussion with Peter Sloterdijk

Within the scope of ‘‘Dialogues du contemporain’’ (Contemporary Dialogues), the Institut français and the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe will be welcoming German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk for a discussion on his book, Après nous le déluge, on Monday, October 17 at 8 p.m. in the Odéon’s main auditorium.
‘‘Après nous le déluge’’. At a time where climate change is darkening our future perspectives, a host of trials and works are under way to explore the contemporary transformations of our perception of time as well as our collective role in history. With regard to questioning the period in which we are living, German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk stands out due to his original diagnosis. According to him, this catastrophic horizon is all the more disturbing, as it means, for two to three centuries now, defining oneself entirely according to the future rather than the past. By substituting faith in progress, while referring to tradition, our culture has become accustomed to affirming that the most significant events are yet to come. What are the consequences both at the personal and political levels of this collective trend by which we define ourselves with respect to what has not yet happened?
Through such an outstanding encounter with one of the main thinkers of our time, via a discussion with philosopher Laurent de Sutter, the Institut français and Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe are pursuing its second season of the ‘‘Contemporary Dialogues’’ series with tremendous encounters between French and foreign intellectuals from all fields.
