The Institut français – 2016 Louis Marcorelles Prize goes to "La Permanence" by Alice Diop

La Permanence, by Alice Diop, a documentary evoking medical consultations for persons in difficulty in the Greater Paris Area, was distinguished with the 2016 Institut français – Louis Marcorelles Prize.
Within the scope of the 38th edition of the International Cinéma du reel Festival held at the Centre Pompidou, the Institut français – Louis Marcorelles prize went to, on March 26, 2016, Alice Diop for her film, La Permanence.
For one year, Alice Diop filmed each week doctors’ consultations for persons in difficulty, at the Avicenne Hospital of Bobigny. This sensitive topic, one of urgency today, in her documentary demonstrates outstandingly meticulous esthetic value and empathy. The film stands as a great example of the possibilities for cinematography to show the real world, hence inviting us to give thought to issues regarding borders and humanity.

The Institut français – Louis Marcorelles Prize (award of 7,000 Euros) each year distinguishes a film for its originality, formal compliance and its contribution to our understanding of the world in which we live. The panel of judges for the French Competition was this year made up of: Cecilia Barrionuevo, program manager for the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, Véronique Joo'Aisenberg, Head of Cinémathèque Afrique at the Institut français, Karel Och, Artistic Director of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
The panel of judges of the French Competition also gave a special award to Sfumato by Christophe Bisson, about the painter Bernard Legay, for his radical poetic sense and existential dimension. This rare film, ever so non-conventional and personal, formed an intense bond between matter, the artist and life.
