Translation grants for publishers of French language authors

The Institut français, operator of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development for cultural action abroad and the French cultural network in the world, make available to publishers a number of grants for the purchase of the rights and the translation of French language authors initially published in France. For twenty-five years, the Book Publication Assistance Programmes have contributed to the publication of over 20 000 books by French authors and French-speaking authors in 75 countries.

The Publication Assistance Programme at the Institut français / Grants for the Purchase of Rights

Support from the Institut français consists of funding (part or all) of the advance paid on the rights negotiated between the French publishers and publishers from around the world for books of all kinds, with the exception of school or university text books. Projects may be in a variety of fields : literature the humanities, youth, comics, theatre, poetry and university and scientific publications…

The programme exclusively supports professional publishers who publish works by French-speaking authors in a local language (including French) whose publishing and translation rights are held by a French publisher. The advance is paid directly to the French publisher by the Institut français who thus replaces the foreign publisher. Works that are in the public domain are not concerned by the programme.

A commission comprised of publishing representatives and organizations that provide funding to the book sector allocate the grants based on:
  • The intrinsic quality of the work and its importance within the context of French creation and thought,
  • The engagement of the foreign publisher to develop and maintain a translation and publication policy in favour of French authors,
  • The foreign publisher’s commitment with regard to the dissemination and promotion of the book.
The projects presented must be in the course of completion and must be published within a reasonable timeframe. No grant shall be provided for a book that has already been published.

When to file an application?
The commissions meet twice a year: in February (closing date for the submission of projects in January) and in June (closing date for the submission of projects in May).
