Theater

French theater lays claim to its originality and wealth of writings: the fertility of its creations comes from the diversity of artists and their ability to question the medium itself.

Keen to offer a boost to contemporary French theater with the help of increased distribution channels and international co-productions, the Institut français supports works which renew theatrical forms. Particular attention is paid to the new generations.

For theater, the Institut français develops its activities via four key areas: expertise and advice; distribution; cooperation and coproduction; promotion.

Expertise and advice

Based on the artistic expertise of its teams and their knowledge of French and international theater community, the Institut français is the main contact for :
• artists, guiding their approaches to distribution channels abroad;
• foreign professionals and those from the French cultural network abroad, helping them scout new talents and host the artistic teams for their shows.

Distribution

The Institut français, in close collaboration with the French cultural network abroad :

• continues to support festivals and theaters abroad, engaged in the production of contemporary French theater;
• provides significant support to touring companies and reputed artists (Comédie-Française, Théâtre du Soleil etc.).
• creates opportunities and visibility for French writers and directors, in priority countries and strategic capital cities with specially designed projects developed in collaboration with the French cultural network abroad and their local partners (the Chinese festival Croisements, Face à Face, IntegraleS, Master Class).

Cooperation and coproduction

The cooperation program "Théâtre Export" is designed to enable artists to set up a theater production abroad, with the actors of a permanent international theater or in partnership with a company or an international festival.
It meets three objectives by :
• encouraging French directors to gain exposure to the international scene;
• promoting contemporary French texts around the world;
• enabling the exchange of best practice and expertise in both technical and creative dimensions of the show: set design, direction, lighting, etc.

By creating valuable connections and networks on the international cultural scene, Théâtre Export offers artists real opportunities to exchange and collaborate as well as opportunities to travel, broadening experiences and questionings around this subject matter.

Promotion

The Institut français contributes to the awareness of theatrical activity also through a policy of welcoming foreign professionals:

• at festivals and key rendez-vous in the theatrical calendar (Festival d'Avignon, Festival Stage Set, Théâtre2Gennevilliers etc.)
• within the scope of FOCUS Théâtre: a collective project designed and created by the Manège Maubeuge-Mons, the Institut français and Onda during the Via Festival promoting the richness and diversity of French theater. FOCUS théâtre is a unique opportunity to discover, over a weekend, a selection of particularly significant new theater trends.

The Institut français also supports the presence of French shows scheduled within international trade shows (Cinars-Montreal, TPAM- okohama, Pam Korea etc.).
