Laurence Gateau, director of the Frac des Pays de la Loire, collaborated with the curator Miguel Amado to design this exhibition, which brings together artists from four distinct generations. Some of their practices are characterised by a more conceptual approach, others by a more sensory one; some focus on a chosen subject, others question the form. All use a wide variety of media, including installation, film, photography, sculpture and writing.
The artists in the "Communauté imaginée" exhibition
Sérgio Carronha, a Portuguese artist, working with sculpture, installations and ceramics through which he searches for the material and symbolism inspired by the landscape of the Alentejo (the Portuguese region where he lives). His works, made with recycled and natural materials with poetic connotations (earth, stones, minerals, pigments), sometimes evoke utilitarian objects, geometry, topographical elements or spiritualism.
Mónica de Miranda, a Portuguese artist of Angolan origin who lives in Lisbon. Her work takes the form of photography and film, and is inscribed in the context of the African diaspora in Portugal. She reflects on themes of geography and identity, mixing personal narratives, colonial histories and questions of belonging and displacement.
Musa paradisiaca, a duo based in Lisbon and composed of Eduardo Guerra and Miguel Ferrão. Their work takes the form of sculpture, films, drawings and performances. More recently, another facet of their practice is the organisation of public programmes, including film screenings and reading groups. They are part of the tradition of the artist as ethnographer, interested in popular culture, vernacular languages, critical theory and postcolonial narratives.
Rita Sobral Campos, Portuguese artist based in New York. Her work manifests itself in the form of sculpture, writings, videos and prints, her research ranges from discourses on reason and madness to journalism, science fiction, futurism, philosophy and religion. She uses narrative techniques and often refers to the tradition of minimalism.
The exhibition Communauté imaginée is presented as part of the France-Portugal 2022 Season, implemented by the Institut français for the French segment.
