“Design, now” - French presence at the Fuorisalone digital in Milan

Updated on 10/06/2020

For its 2020 edition, the Milan Furniture Fair is taking on a digital format with an unprecedented programme from 15th to 21st June. The Institut français promotes the French presence at this event, thanks to its programme produced in cooperation with players from the French design scene.

A digital version of the Furniture Fair

Last March, the Milan Furniture Fair cancelled its 2020 edition, which was initially scheduled for April, and then reinstated it from 15th to 21st June in a digital format via the Already implemented at past editions, alongside the Fuorisalone magazine, the platform is revising its structure this year. As the central portal for the event, it will be enriched with new tools for this 2020 edition:

  • Fuori Salone TV, dedicated to on-demand videos and live streams, from 15th to 21st June;
  • Fuori Salone Meets, the driving force behind extensive networking for creators and operators in the sector throughout the month of June. will be at the heart of the system, organising and presenting the content that will be offered in the two new tools and distributed via social media and the magazine. Thanks to these new measures, this platform will be directly updated to include all useful content, presenting new projects and different events.

Promoting French design

During the 2019 edition of the Furniture Fair, the Ministry of Culture, wishing to highlight the dynamism of the French design scene, initiated a communications operation (both at the Furniture Fair and on the supplementary Fuorisalone). A website, an Instagram account and a printed guide made it possible to map out the wealth of the French design offer in Milan.

For the 2020 edition, in this digital setting, the Institut français is implementing this operation with the support of the Ministry of Culture, in partnership with the Institut français Milan on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the Institut français of Italy, Business France Italy and a group of professional and institutional players in French design.

To this end, the Institut français has implemented a programme that will take place from 15th to 21st June. Entitled "Design, now - the French presence at the Fuorisalone Digital", this programme will be divided into two sections:

  • A section will present the projects supported by the Institut français, which were intended to be presented in Milan this past April: Constance Guisset's solo exhibition, the Paint Fiction project by Studio Gaëlle Gabillet and Stéphane Villard and the ESTORAMA project by the Écoles du Grand Est. The planned support of Mobilier National for the arts and design professions will also be part of this programme.
  • Another section will present three questions to a number of designers who would have participated in Milan Design Week (such as Sam Baron, La double clique and Robert Stadler) and more broadly to actors/representatives of national institutions, design schools and festivals, such as the Bordeaux Museum of Decorative Arts and Design; the St-Etienne Cité du Design; Lille, World Capital of Design; ENSAD; the ENSCI and the social-design platform Agrafmobile. Since 2019, they have been the preferred contacts for the Institut français in the context of its design sector strategy. These interviews are conducted under the editorial direction of Emanuele Quinz (researcher at ENSAD) and Giusi Tinella, in charge of design at the Institut français.
