The Institut français, ARTE Education and European Schoolnet are launching the development of the European Film Factory, a project co-financed to the tune of one million euros by the European Union's MEDIA/Creative Europe programme. This summer, the European Commission and the members of the project consortium signed the grant agreement covering an eighteen month period from 1st June 2019 to 31st December 2020.

The Institut français, project leader with extensive experience in cinema education, has joined forces with two partners on the cutting edge of digital innovation in schools to develop the European Film Factory: ARTE Education, subsidiary of the European television channel behind the digital education service Educ’ARTE and European Schoolnet, a non-profit organisation that brings together thirty-four Ministries of Education in Europe.

From the start of the 2020 academic year, the European Film Factory will enable students and teachers from all the Member States of the Creative Europe programme to access a catalogue of ten films from Europe’s cinematic heritage online, free of charge. An interactive platform will allow pupils to take an active part in their cinema education (tools developed by Educ’ARTE for annotating, screenshotting, etc.). The ten films suggested and selected by a European jury of film and education industry professionals will be diverse in terms of year of production, gender, nationality and subject matter. The offering will also be accessible on mobile screens and will thus take into account the use habits of young people between the ages of 11 and 18. The films will be subtitled and the platform will be available in German, French, English, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Romanian and Greek, covering the eight most spoken languages in the European Union.
