Since its official launch in August, the Saison de la France au Brésil has been rolling out from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, via Belo Horizonte. Artists, thinkers and institutions are sharing their knowledge, talents and energy to strengthen the cultural dialogue between our two countries. Let's take a look at some of the highlights of recent weeks.
La saison de la France au Brésil was invited to the Bienal Internacional de Dança do Ceará in Fortaleza from October 24 to November 1, 2025, as part of the CAIS - Connexions Artistiques Internationales project, dedicated to exchanges between France and the Brazilian Nordeste.
The "Opéra national de Paris no Brasil" cycle also established itself as one of the highlights of this Season. Several concerts revolved around the fig by Georges Bizet, a famous 19th-century French composer.
From September 2 to November 2, 2025, the Casa Fiat de Cultura in Belo Horizonte (MG) hosted the "Niki de Saint Phalle" exhibition. This retrospective brought together 67 works by the Franco-American artist - including 66 from the holdings of the MAMAC (Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Nice) and one from the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.
The exhibition featured her famous "Nanas", her "Assemblage painting" (circa 1959), "Long Shot - Second Shooting Session" (1961) and "Nana Boule sans Tête" (circa 1965), most of which had never been seen before in Brazil.
The exhibition highlighted Niki de Saint Phalle's commitment to female emancipation, LGBTQIA+ rights and the fight against racism. The event confirmed Casa Fiat de Cultura's commitment to promoting access to contemporary art and major social debates, within a framework of Franco-Brazilian exchange.
In partnership with the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC), the ARCHIVES project brought together French and Brazilian specialists in the field of preservation at a symposium in Rio and São Paulo, following on from a collaboration with the INA archives. The event also included the presentation and discussion of an Alberto Cavalcanti film restored by the CNC, "Rien que les heures". With the Forum des Images, films by women directors were presented. In parallel, the Festival do Rio and the Cinemateca Brasileira organized a special program featuring French women directors. The Forum des Images also hosted a selection of documentaries by Brazilian women filmmakers, in the presence of the documentary filmmakers.
The "Rendezvous Unifrance" project - an institution dedicated to promoting French cinema - brought together salespeople from French companies and distributors/exhibitors from Latin America during the Festival do Rio / Rio Market. The aim was to offer French companies a better understanding of the local market and enable discussion of mechanisms and opportunities for broader engagement and increased presence of French / European cinema in Latin America, thus promoting diversity and strengthening business relationships.
The "Film Schools" project was an exchange of know-how and techniques between Brazilian and French film schools. It took place during the Festival do Rio and welcomed students and teachers from French film schools, who worked jointly with their Brazilian counterparts. A collective short film was produced and screened - at the end of the program - during the Festival do Rio.
