The Programme d'Aide à la Publication - cession de droits (PAP) saw a year 2024 particularly rich in projects and diversity. The program, whose mission is to support foreign publishing houses in the publication of French-language works, aims to broaden the acquisition of rights and diversify catalogs. In 2025, the program will celebrate its 35th anniversary. In 2024, the Institut français supported 267 projects, representing a total of 386,000 euros, in 53 countries.
Focused on the transfer of rights, the Institut français de Paris's Programme d'Aide à la Publication supports the efforts of foreign publishing houses committed to publishing titles translated from French. In this way, the PAP offers French-speaking and non-French-speaking readers access to contemporary French-language creativity and thought. Since 1990, these initiatives have contributed to the publication of nearly 26,000 titles by French authors in 80 countries.
This year, 53 countries submitted a total of 468 projects, of which 57% were supported. These significant figures testify to the growing enthusiasm of foreign publishing houses for the publication of French-language titles in original or translated versions, and underline the importance of this program in the global publishing landscape.
Brazilian publishers have particularly distinguished themselves this year through the relevance of the projects submitted, notably as part of the France-Brazil Cultural Season. This initiative strengthened cultural and literary exchanges between the two countries, highlighting Brazilian literary richness and curiosity.
Authors Neige Sinno and Jean-Baptiste Andrea also stood out as the most supported and solicited authors this year. Their success testifies to the quality and impact of their works in relation to current literary events, but also to the international Goncourt Choices, which this year awarded their prizes overwhelmingly to these two authors for their respective titles, Triste Tigre and Veiller sur elle.
In 2024, the program thus supported 226 foreign publishing houses, covering 43 languages of translation.
The French Institute's Publication Assistance Program inscribes a strong commitment to the diversity and circulation of literary works, as well as the promotion of cultural exchanges. It also underlines the challenges we face in continuing to support emerging and established voices in the publishing world.
For its 35th edition, the Publication Assistance Program will particularly support emerging and children's books in 2025, offering a selection of titles from the winners of recent editions Festival du premier roman and the children's selection Shoot the Book! 2024 that will be given priority consideration during the 2025 review panels.
