Focused on rights acquisition, the Institut français de Paris's Publication Assistance Programme (PAP) supports the efforts of foreign publishers committed to translating and publishing titles originally written in French. PAP enables both French-speaking and non-French-speaking audiences to access contemporary French-language creativity and thought. Since 1990, these initiatives have facilitated the publication of nearly 26,000 titles by French authors in 80 countries.
This year, 53 countries submitted a total of 468 projects, 57% of which received support. These significant numbers highlight the growing enthusiasm of foreign publishers for French-language titles, whether in their original or translated versions, and underline the importance of this program in the global publishing landscape.
Brazilian publishers stood out this year with the relevance of their submitted projects, particularly within the framework of the France-Brazil Cultural Season. This initiative strengthened cultural and literary exchanges between the two countries, showcasing Brazil's literary richness and curiosity.
Authors Neige Sinno and Jean-Baptiste Andrea also shone as the most supported and sought-after writers this year. Their success reflects the quality and impact of their works, which resonated with literary events and the Choix Goncourt internationaux. These awards largely favored their respective titles, Triste Tigre and Veiller sur elle.
In 2024, the program supported 226 foreign publishers, covering translations into 43 languages.
The Institut français’s Publication Assistance Program demonstrates a strong commitment to the diversity and circulation of literary works and the promotion of cultural exchanges. It also highlights the challenges of continuing to support emerging and established voices in the publishing world.
For its 35th edition in 2025, the program will prioritize supporting emerging authors and children's literature, focusing on titles selected from recent winners of the Festival du premier Roman and the 2024 Shoot the Book! youth selection, to be given priority during the 2025 review commissions.
