The artwork "Hedera" by artist Clara Rivault unfolds across the façade of the Institut français

Winner of the Groupe Terrot x Institut français call for applications in October 2023, Clara Rivault installed her artwork on the façade of the new headquarters of the Institut français. Titled Hedera, meaning ivy in Latin, it spreads and winds around the building's arches and windows, poetically symbolizing the connections linking the Institut français with the French cultural network abroad and all its French and international partners.

In July 2023, Groupe Terrot and the Institut français collaborated to launch a call for applications for the creation of an artwork to adorn the façade of the new premises of the Institut français at 40 rue de la Folie-Regnault in the 11th arrondissement of Paris.

This initiative is part of the Ministry of Culture's "1 building, 1 artwork" charter, which aims to integrate art into private buildings, bringing works closer to the public, and to which Groupe Terrot has been a signatory for over five years.

The selection process for the artwork took place through two deliberation committees organized on September 7 and October 4, 2023. First, a pre-selection jury, composed of about ten employees from the Institut français and Groupe Terrot, reviewed around forty submitted projects and shortlisted five finalists. These selected artists were then given an additional month to refine their project.

The second jury was made up of various art and cultural press personalities: Armelle Dakouo, Artistic Director at AKAA Art & Design Fair; Valérie Duponchelle, senior reporter at Le Figaro; Patrick Bloche, Deputy Mayor of Paris and Chairman of the Board of the Pavillon de l'Arsenal; Katia Naït Bouda, Senior Asset Manager at Union Investment Real Estate France; Samuel Gelrubin, President of Groupe Terrot; and Eva Nguyen Binh, President of the Institut français. After deliberation, the final committee chose Clara Rivault's artistic project.

With the installation of the Hedera artwork, the new headquarters of the Institut français, the result of a two-and-a-half-year real estate project and intended as a showcase for French creativity, takes on new colors.

About the artwork "Hedera"

For this project designed for the Institut français, the artist aimed to create a work that embodies cultural diversity, international relations, and encounters, thus echoing the missions and values of the Institut français.

Hedera embodies the diversity and cultural richness of international exchanges. The organic spread of the artwork evokes the growth of ivy, harmoniously proliferating across the façade of the Institut français headquarters. The twenty-five stained glass windows that make up this living sculpture are created from photographic samples of Parisian locations and skies, captured by the artist during the production period. The ceramic inks used are environmentally friendly, aligning with the project's core values. Like crystalline fruits, these unique talismans diffuse light in vibrant colors, symbols of organic growth and vitality.

Thus, light becomes the oxygen that breathes life into Hedera, offering a sensory and visual experience to passersby and visitors of the Institut français. Through this creation, the artist seeks to create a moment of deep contemplation in the urban space and invites passersby to rediscover the poetic possibilities of everyday life. The building's façade becomes the reflection of a real landscape, providing an immersive experience that awakens the senses and emotions, while strengthening the connection between art, nature, and the community.
