In Trait(s), the Scom company addresses young audiences to tell the story of circus fundamentals: the body, the family and the circle. Through a subtle and sensitive performance, it deciphers the circus milieu between acrobatics, music and refined narration. The show was presented during a tour of nearly 15 dates in China over the months of April and May thanks to the support of the French Institute's IF Export program and in partnership with the French Institute in Beijing.

A contemporary circus company

Created in 2016 by Coline Garcia and Régis Huvelin, Sterno Circo Occipito Mastoidienne is a contemporary circus company. Its vocation is to stimulate innovation and creation for young audiences by exploring themes of everyday life and the construction of our identities. The company also intends to disseminate its work in rural areas, and is working on portable devices capable of adapting to unequipped venues. At the same time, the Scom company is committed to a militant approach to creation in favor of gender equality, and is careful not to convey gendered stereotypes in its creations.

Giving the circus a look

Trait(s) is an essay in graphic circus, the final part of a triptych aimed at young audiences. With this new show, the Scom company revisits, in a contemporary way, the three fundamentals of circus: the body, the family and the circle. Here, a circus artist on the Cyr wheel creates a pictorial work using her apparatus, inspired by painters such as Kandinsky, Kusama and Sonia Delaunay. An opportunity for the Scom company to explore the circle and give a better view of the components of the circus.

A work on the circle

In Trait(s), the circle motif is worked through a play of shapes and colors to describe circus movement. In this way, the art of circus is made more accessible to young audiences through a circular stage space delimited by three tiers. With live music and real acrobatic freedom, it's a fine, sensitive piece of writing that unfolds before the spectator's eyes, telling the story of drawing and the importance of leaving a trace. A piece built around the pleasure of creation and the freedom of gesture.

Supported by the IF Export program

Thanks to support from the IF Export program, the Scom company is touring China during April and May 2025. This program provides international support for French or French-based creators and cultural partners, for projects involving distribution, cooperation or presence at major events. The Scom company benefits from a six-week tour with over twelve dates in the country, where workshops and encounters around painting, artistic gesture and movement are developed with classes, teachers and families.
