I Look Forward to our Independence is a short film co-directed by Brunna Laboissière with Bruna Carvalho Almeida, two Brazilian film directors, which was premiered at the 2021 International Short Film Competition in Oberhausen.

In May 2019, they travelled to Algiers, during the demonstrations by Harak – the people’s movement for democracy. In the middle of the crowd they met a young girl. The sea that separated them is the same that can unite them.

“Here, we also feel a weight in suspension that prevents us from moving forward”. 

“Today, when I left the house, everything seemed to be in place. And that shocked me. Then I remembered our days in Algiers.” 

“It’s 17 May 2019 today. From here it’s possible to hear the crowd below.” 

“A girl stands out from the crowd. She expressed herself during a debate with many men around her:

 – The women had been silent for more than 20 years!” 

“Freedom! Freedom! We are not scared of being free!

It is the people who should choose the president!

A civil government, not military!”

Algeria is in a difficult situation.” 

“I think there is a force bigger than us all that supports the army to govern third world countries, like our countries.”
