Claire Richard

I construct the book as a documentary story with storytelling and forms similar to sound editing.

Author, journalist and translator Claire Richard focuses on the complex relationship between representation and the media. The multiplicity of her collaborations allows her to combine radio writing, literature and digital arts to study our relationship with images.

A student at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon, Claire Richard continued her studies at the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Institute of Social Sciences Graduate Studies), then at New York University. While her research focuses mainly on the politics of representation in the media, in 2012 she published Politiques de la littérature contemporaine, politiques du lien (Politics of contemporary literature, Politics of the link) with Archives contemporaines.

When she returned to Paris, she worked as an author and journalist, adding to her collaborations (Rue 89, L'Obs, Philosophie magazine) and also worked as a translator. She also writes and produces radio fiction for France Culture and Arte, and has been the editor-in-chief of the Digital Society Forum since 2018.

Following publication of her work Young Lords : histoire des Black Panthers latinos (1969-1976) - Young Lords: History of the Latino Black Panthers (1969-1976) - in 2017, the author adapted her radio drama Les Chemins de désir (The Paths of Desire) into text in 2019 with the publisher Seuil.

Claire Richard makes the intersection of intimacy, literature and politics her specialty. In particular, she questions our relationship with new technologies and how they influence our interactions. From radio to writing, she wields a sustained but deeply contemporary language that evokes feminism and the quest for desire in narratives representing initiation and reflection.

In Les Chemins de désir, she places the “I” at the heart of her literary project. Through this study of internet pornography, the author captures, with modernity and relevance, the mix of repulsion and the inevitable attraction that forces us to observe.

Winner of the 2017 SACD New Radio Talent Prize, in 2019 Claire Richard received the 1st Europa Prize in the fiction series category for Chemins de désir.

Claire Richard will continue her analysis of feminism and return to one of her favourite worlds – American culture – in her next novel, Seules au monde (Alone in the World). Drawing on real-life facts, the writer plans to portray the feminist communities established in Vermont and Alabama in the 1970s.
