Fabienne Giezendanner is awarded the Institut français - Les Ailleurs Arles immersive writing residency

Short films and new media allow me to freely create the kind of writing I feel comfortable with.

Fabienne Giezendanner is an animator and scriptwriter who works with virtual reality and its power of immersion. Believing in a sensitive cinema, capable of making the spectator think and travel, she produces innovative works, frequently acknowledged by international festivals. She is the recipient of this year's Institut Français - Les Ailleurs Arles immersive writing residency, which takes place from 21 to 28 august 2022 as part of the Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles.

Born on 12 October 1967 in Besançon, Fabienne Giezendanner has been making live action and animated short films since 1989. In parallel to this activity, she has been designing interactive experiences for virtual reality headsets since 2000. As a scriptwriter for animated series, she is also involved in the design and production of online games and CD-ROMs. Since 2005, she has been teaching at the Haute École d'Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud in the communications department.

After two first short films, Nomades (1988) and Les enfers font salle comble (1991), her third film, Nain géant, was shown at many festivals and won several major awards in 2014. Three years later, she directed Les Gratte-ciel, then wrote, directed and produced Dreamin'Zone, an immersive VR project. The film won the 2019 Ina Expert award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. She currently works for Zéro de Conduite Productions and Studio Igloo Spirit.

In her short films, Fabienne Giezendanner wants to immerse the viewer and introduce subjects that make them think about our world. 2014's Nain géant follows a young Inuit girl, Little Snow, who sets out to capture a low-flying bird to become an adult. In the heart of a fantastic and mysterious fjord, the director depicts her heroine with sensitivity and subtlety.

With Les Gratte-ciel in 2017, a 12-minute animated film, she depicts two billionaires engaged in a senseless skyscraper competition. In her short film, she points the finger at consumer society and the endless quest for power. Adapted from the book by Albertine and Germano Zullo, it was widely acclaimed at festivals. Her latest project, Dreamin'Zone, takes her to Korea and redraws the memories of Yuri, a 60-year-old woman who looks back on her past and travels through the demilitarised zone between the two Koreas.

Fabienne Giezendanner's short films are regularly shown at festivals around the world and have had a strong impact. Nain Géant made an impression in Seoul, Sao Paulo, Baden and Bogota. It was awarded the prize for best animated film at the Oregon Independent Film Festival in 2015, as well as the prize for best animated short film at the Palm Springs International ShortFest.

After receiving the Lumière Award 2020 for best VR work at Stereopsia in Belgium for Dreamin'Zone, the director was recently awarded the VR Arles writing residency. Funded by the VR Arles Festival and the Institut français, this residency supports creators in the development of an innovative writing project for virtual reality platforms. It also aims to deepen the resident artists' knowledge of the creative and narrative potential of immersive technologies.
