Born in 1979 in Athens, Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves studied at the Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs art and design school in Paris and created her first works in the Atelier de recherches interactives (interactive research workshop). Her first group exhibition, Ecoute (Listen) (2004) was held at the centre national d’art et de culture Georges-Pompidou (Pompidou Centre) and arranges several sound creations, a medium she explores in her immersive installations such as Continuum (2018) at the Biennale des imaginaires numériques (Biennale of Digital Imagination).

Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves is passionate about astrophysics and questions the limits of human perception, as in Monolith (2008), a work mixing video projection with light, sound and smoke effects. 

Light is both the subject and material in Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves’ works. The artist delves into what is known about astrophysics to question our relationship of the body here and now in other space-times. Since 2011, she has been working with the astrophysicist Fabio Acero on installations that combine art and science such as Supernova (2011) or Exo (2015).

Exo is a visual sound device installed at night, outdoors. The artist uses the light of lasers to point at stars nearby or “in deep in the sky”. In doing so, she makes the how the Earth’s movement is in synchronicity with that of the cosmos, illustrated in music, and reads the sky in real time. In 2018, for Continuum, she worked with the musician Eliane Radigue (born in 1932). This immersive installation created using images of Mars taken by the NASA rovers is a film paying tribute to the pioneer of electronic music. 

The works of Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves are shown all over the world. Her first commission abroad was from London City Hall and the Watermans Arts Center, for the work Geometry (2012). Her work has been presented at the New Art Space/Sonic Acts in Amsterdam or the OCAT in Shanghai. For Continuum (2018), she worked with scientists from Caltech University in Pasadena, working in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, belonging to NASA, among others.
