Stéphane Bissières, composer and artist

I am interested in the representation of data in the real world making the virtual tangible, to give the observer the feeling of being a witness.

Composer, performer and artist, Stéphane Bissières works with sound and data in the service of generative art where mathematical precision is combined with poetry.

Trained in mathematics, Stéphane Bissières also studied the guitar, trumpet and piano, which remain one of his favourite means of expression. After obtaining a degree in music, he won the residency prize of the International Institute of Electroacoustic Music of Bourges and the Sacem prize for composition. Active on the jazz and techno scenes, where he performs under the stage name of Bunq, in 2006 he created a pilot class dedicated to electroacoustic improvisation and the elaboration of real time sound installations. He also teaches interactive music creation at the INA. He also regularly collaborates with Radio France, composing and interpreting numerous soundtracks, notably for the "Contes du Jour et de la Nuit", alongside the storyteller Véronique Sauger, or recently for the radio adaptation of Michel Houellebecq's novel, Extension du domaine de la lutte. He has been performing and exhibiting generative artworks internationally since 2011.

Stéphane Bissières works with mathematical models, drawing on the observation of their expressions in nature and transposing them into sound and visual environments generated in real time. This allows him to reflect on forms of hybridisation with the living and on what links humans to technology, as in his work Human Likes (2016), in which the facial recognition of the audience creates a choreography of geometric patterns that evolve according to the interactions. In his performances, such as SURU (2014) or KURURI (2018, created in Tokyo), dance is mixed with VJing and electronic music, forming a whole where an intimate relationship is formed between body, sound and visual material. Influenced by minimalist music, Stéphane Bissières applies himself to generating variations from repeated motifs, whose progressive regeneration offers itself to the eyes and ears of the audience as a work in a state of perpetual renewal.

Stéphane Bissières regularly conceives and deploys his work abroad, particularly in Asia. His interactive installation Human Likes was shown in Shenzhen (China) as part of Design Week and has also been selected for numerous festivals, such as the Journées du Patrimoine and the Féeries Nocturnes. Recently, his piece Effet de champ (2021), selected for the Biennale Némo at the Centquatre, is an installation composed of sixteen jars filled with black ferrofluid, a viscous material that reacts to electromagnetic stimuli. A real ballet for the eyes, which uses the interface of a sequencer, deploying choreography that evokes both musical notation and abstract expressionism.
