In 1991, Sylvain Groud graduated from the contemporary dance department of CNSMD, the Paris National Conservatory for the Study of Music and Dance. He was then awarded the Bagnolet Competition interpretation prize with the Gigi Caciuleanu Company. From 1992 to 2002, he was part of the Angelin Preljocaj Company.
The choreographer then moved to Normandy where he founded the MAD Company and developed his concept of in situ pieces in order to bring dance to the fore where it was not expected.
A dancer who works in a poetic way, Sylvain Groud’s fundamental passion is for the interaction between dance and music, and encounters between them. Director of the Ballet du Nord at the National Centre for Choreography in Roubaix, Hauts-de-France, which he renamed CCN and Vous !, he wants to recreate ties with the community through participatory projects such as CCN Mobile, a template to be rolled out throughout the region. He set up the choreographic event 19/21 where he improvises with anyone who wants to take part in creating a show. With his project Impromptus, he dances alone in the city, in order to open people's eyes to dance and to inspire the community.
In 2002, Sylvain Groud set out to create plays in Romania, at the National Theatre in Bucharest and the National Theatre in Cluj-Napoca, as well as the National Opera & Ballet in Skopje, Macedonia.
Between 2014 and 2016 he set up Correspon[danses], a collective and digital platform of danced portraits that are sent by European secondary school students and supported by artists. In 2019, he will take part in the Marrakech On Marche Festival organised by choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou. To raise awareness of contemporary dance among the city’s communities, this festival will mainly take place in public spaces.
