The Lithuanian artist Anastasia Sosunova is exhibiting her work in France

My practice in installation, sculpture, and moving images takes on different scales, weaving together personal stories and subtle material gestures as they intertwine within larger narratives.

Visual artist Anastasia Sosunova made a name for herself in her home country, Lithuania, with creations that intertwine graphic art, sculpture, video, and installation. Complex stories, rituals, and collective psychologies are transcribed into an "alternative form of popular folklore," where the artist stages new narrative sketches. Today, Anastasia Sosunova is part of the Lithuanian Season in France.

Originally from Ignalina, Lithuania, where she was born in 1993, Anastasia Sosunova is a visual artist who lives and works in Vilnius. From 2011 to 2015, she studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, obtaining a bachelor's degree in graphic arts. She then earned a master’s degree in sculpture, also from the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Resolutely multidisciplinary, her work combines video, installation, sculpture, and graphic art. She draws inspiration from personal stories and their links to cultural, economic, and spiritual structures. In 2017, she held her first exhibition, Demikhov Dog, at the Ignalina Culture and Sports Center.

The following years were rich in projects, including Second Skin, Barry Walking Himself, and Diluvial Valleys. In 2022, she worked on a new exhibition, Dance As You Wrestle, presented at Cell Project Space in London, followed by DIY in Vilnius in 2023 and Ghost Ship at Arsenal Gallery in Bialystok in 2024. She has exhibited her work in renowned venues such as the Salzburger Kunstverein, KIASMA in Helsinki, Cell Project Space, and the BFI Film Festival at the ICA in London. Other prestigious locations like the 14th Kaunas Biennale, Malmö Konstmuseum, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the 14th Baltic Triennial in Vilnius have also showcased her work.

Lived stories are the source of Anastasia Sosunova's works. She employs a process of distortion, where she may blend ancient mythologies, hybrid entities, and surveillance society to create alternative forms of "contemporary folklore." Through this process, the artist questions the existence and coexistence of homes, offering a critical perspective on power structures and collective psychology. She also stages the influence of control systems, traditions, and religious beliefs to better understand how they shape individual behavior in our time.

In her recent works, Anastasia Sosunova explores folk traditions, post-Soviet national identity, and the tension between public and private space in the Covid era. With her videos, she combines historical research and creative fiction to delve deeper into the complex and sometimes elusive feelings of community and belonging.

Anastasia Sosunova’s work has been recognized multiple times. She won the JCDecaux Award from the Lithuanian Contemporary Art Center and JCDecaux in 2018. The Lithuanian Ministry of Culture also awarded her the Young Artist Prize in 2021. Two years later, she received the Marval Collection Prize at Art-O-Rama in Marseille.

The artist is participating in the Lithuanian Season in France. She is notably featured at the Lyon Biennale from September 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025, as well as at Kadist in Paris from October 12, 2024, to January 5, 2025. Her work can also be seen at the Palais de Tokyo from October 17, 2024, to January 5, 2025, at Fondation Fiminco in Romainville from November 10 to December 1, 2024, and at Centre Pompidou, where it has been displayed since September 14, 2024.
