Ivalmok, whose real name is Djamlan Komlan Germain, is a dancer, composer, performer, choreographer, and beatmaker born in Lomé, Togo, on December 10, 1994. Initially trained in dance, he soon integrated music into his practice. At the age of eleven, he joined the traditional Alafia Zodédé group in Lomé while exploring the emerging hip-hop scene in Togo. Watching rehearsals by dancer and choreographer Kossivi Afiadegnigban at the UNESCO Club in Lomé, a student cultural association, he discovered contemporary dance and fell in love with it.
This marked the beginning of an insatiable passion for this energetic artist, constantly seeking new experiences. In 2013, he took a leap and was quickly noticed, eventually joining the National Ballet of Togo. Over three years, he honed his knowledge of traditional dance steps while continuing his musical exploration. After countless nights of experimentation, one of his creations was selected for a performance by a group of engaged students. Gradually, he gained attention from dancers and choreographers such as Ivorian Lou Véronique, Beninese Nourou-Deen Eniola, and Carmelita Siwa. Alongside this, he collaborated with circus, theater, and stilt artists.
For Ivalmok, movement and music are paramount. His universe evokes that of American composer Philip Glass, known for his collaborations with Lucinda Childs and Bob Wilson, as well as artists like René Aubry, Carolyn Carlson, Armand Amar, and Mourad Merzouki. Above all, Ivalmok emphasizes his roots in traditional African rhythms, which he first encountered during childhood vodoun ceremonies. His time with the National Ballet of Togo also exposed him to rhythms from countries such as Burkina Faso and Benin.
With Identité Hybride, his latest project, Ivalmok explores the search for self in a world where technology and social media redefine our understanding of identity. Collaborating with choreographer Nourou-Deen Eniola, he combines folkloric rhythms and sounds with electronic and experimental music.
In 2021, Ivalmok was nominated in the "Beatmaker" category and shortlisted for Togo's Incredible Talent. He has also participated in various festivals, including the One Lagos Fiesta in Nigeria, Africa Danse, and Cotonou Fiesta in Benin. Currently, he is undertaking a five-week residency at GMEM, the National Center for Musical Creation in Marseille, supported by the Institut français' PAIR programme.
Ivalmok is developing Identité Hybride, inspired by the concept of real-time artistic creation as pioneered by the Art-Temps-Réel group. The PAIR program supports residency structures in mainland and overseas France to facilitate the hosting of foreign creators.
