2022 winner of the Institut français' residency programme at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Nooshin Shafiee is a young Iranian photographer who graduated from the Tehran Fine Arts School. 

Nooshin Shafiee has had several solo exhibitions: one at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe - Germany (2019-2020) and three at the Emkan Gallery in Tehran - Iran (Daaj - 2016, Fun Fair - 2018 and Batten - 2020). She has also participated in group exhibitions including Iran: année 38 at the Rencontres d'Arles 2017.

During the course of her studies, Nooshin Shafiee discovered the work of the great French masters of photography such as Eugène Atget, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Brassaï. She is particularly drawn to the work of William Klein. 

Yet it is in her own relationship to Tehran that she feels the same deep connection as each of these artists to the city of Paris. "It is almost seven years that I have been obsessed with urban photography and Tehran has been my main object of desire" (2021). 

After photographing and discovering Tehran, Nooshin Shafiee conducted research in Paris using the same process, discovering her own individuality through the city and working to publish a photo book inspired by the work Paris + Klein (2002). 

The Batten series (2018-2020), presented here, reveals the skeleton of the city of Tehran and its makeshift constructions, a fragile architecture threatening to collapse at any moment. 

Nooshin Shafiee focuses on ephemeral situations, abandoned constructions synonymous with chaotic urban sprawl, observing human activity through the signs and traces left in the city. 

Highlighting urban fragments through flash photography, the artist isolates them from their surroundings to reveal their rough edges. Nooshin Shafiee makes the link between these objects and her own situation of insecurity in Tehran.
