The renewal of this partnership is an opportunity for the Institut français to consolidate its support for the Alliances Françaises around the world, and to adapt its services and facilities to the needs of cultural establishments, following a period of renewal in external cultural action, particularly affected by the health crisis. This dialogue with the Fondation des Alliances Françaises (FAF) is part of an effort to take greater account of the realities on the ground at the Alliances Françaises, in conjunction with the Services de coopération et d'action culturelle (SCACs) and the Instituts français (IFs), and the development of the cooperation and external cultural action network.

The Institut français has developed digital offerings and tools and ensures that the specific characteristics of the Alliances Françaises are taken into account. These can include showcases for France's cultural offerings in capital cities or isolated regions, but they also complement the SCACs and IFs depending on the country's arrangements. The IF promotes collaborative work with the Alliances Françaises through the "Whaller" platform and ensures the professional development of staff at the Alliances Françaises, integrating the local characteristics of the establishments into project selection committees in dialogue with the FAF and the MEAE. Digital transition is one of the major priorities of the MEAE, and the IF contributes to the development of the Alliances Françaises through deployment of the quality Procedure, the adaptation of the French teaching offer and the modernisation of media libraries.

IF works with the Alliances Françaises to promote the development of a contemporary and renewed cultural offering. Following the announcement of the merger between the FAF and the IF in 2018 by the President of the Republic, the Institut français launched a new cultural offering, "La Collection". The aim of this new service, conceived and designed in conjunction with French cultural players, is to take account of needs on the ground in order to enrich the programming of the network's establishments. An increasing number of Alliances Françaises are also taking part in the development of the debate on ideas, notably by organising the Nuit des Idées, and taking advantage of programming tools such as IFcinémaor IF digital, as well as taking part in Novembre numérique
