Our commitments

The Institut français is committed to tackling the major challenges of the 21st century.

The French Institute commits to the ecological transition

The goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, set by the Paris Agreement, requires a rapid reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Cutting emissions by 80% requires collective, coordinated action. Climate preservation, an extremely complex problem with no easy solution but clear urgency, is at the heart of the French Institute's concerns.

The Institut français has adopted a roadmap aimed at rethinking its modes of action as much as possible and contributing to raising awareness among all and sundry.

France's external cultural action, in particular international artistic exchanges and dialogue between cultures and civil societies, is essential to fostering new awareness and new forms of cooperation between states in a world transformed by the environmental and energy crises at work.

Equality between women and men is a priority of the French government, materialized by an international strategy for feminist diplomacy around 5 pillars:

  • Defending rights and freedoms;
  • Fostering participation and representation in all decision-making processes;
  • Fighting gender-based inequalities;
  • Combating gender-based violence and violence against women;
  • Mobilizing funding to advance towards gender equality.

It is within this framework that the French Institute places its policy in favor of equality between women and men, in line with the international strategy of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and the Equality Roadmap of the Ministry of Culture, its two supervisory ministries.

As the pivotal operator for the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture in implementing France's foreign cultural policy, the Institut français wishes to contribute to advancing equality between women and men within the organization and through the implementation of dedicated actions in conjunction with its French and international partners. Already strongly committed to supporting this issue for several years, the Institut français has been carrying a "feminist diplomacy" roadmap since 2022, in order to be exemplary in this area and a visible player in the government's equality policy. With this in mind it has strengthened and forged partnerships with several French players committed around these subjects, in particular the associations Femmes de Culture and Jamais sans Elles.

A CSR Governance Committee created on February 14, 2022 within the French Institute oversees the implementation of the roadmap, under the authority of the President of the French Institute. An EFH referent represents the Institut français on the various working bodies on the subject, and a CSR referent within the Human Resources Department coordinates management-related actions internally.

Artificial intelligence roadmap

The Institut français intends to make artificial intelligence (AI) a lever for action in the service of its fundamental missions, while remaining attentive to cultural, economic, social, legal and environmental issues, in line with its values. In a context of profound change in digital uses, this roadmap aims to support the teams of the Institut français and the French cultural network abroad in a responsible, ethical and pragmatic appropriation of AI tools that must, that must support them in carrying out their missions and contribute to the optimization of processes, without replacing them.

This AI roadmap also reflects the desire to maintain the Institut français in its role as a benchmark public player in cultural, linguistic and technological innovation, by promoting a useful and responsible use of AI in the service of the cultural commons that incorporates the ecological challenge. This approach is in line with the fundamental principles of digital sovereignty, transparency, respect for copyright and neighboring rights, pluralism and compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
