Oriane Hurard

VR contributes something new to understanding a story or universe.

A producer and author, Oriane Hurard has been working in the audiovisual and digital experience field for the past ten years or so. She is a producer at the Les Produits Frais company, and notably produced L’Île des morts (2018) by Benjamin Nuel, which received an award at the Venice International Film Festival.

Oriane Hurard loves TV series and films, and chose to study them : she did a Film and Audiovisual degree at the Sorbonne, then a Master in production at INA Sup. When she graduated, transmedia seemed obvious, and meant she did not have to choose between film, documentaries and fiction, and she started working for I Love Transmedia, the Tous Écrans Festival or Séries Mania.

She joined Les Produits Frais as a producer in 2014, more specifically in charge of interactive and immersive works, and began exploring a diversified editorial line, from film to documentary, series to virtual reality.

She is also a writer, she participated to the first edition of the writing residency dedicated to immersive narratives initiated by the Institut français and the VR Arles festival with her project Je suis un cœur d’artichaut (Tinder Is The Night), currently in development. 

The producer likes supporting writers’ visions by favouring long-term collaborations, as her work with Benjamin Nuel shows, having produced VR experiences, Héritage – a futuristic dystopia in 3D animation – in 2017, then L'Île des morts in 2018, which takes a new look at the work by Arnold Böcklin.

« I’m interested in thinking outside of the box to see which story goes with which medium », Oriane Hurard likes to explain. « Adapting the story to the medium is crucial ». With Meet Mortaza (2020), a VR film with an augmented reality journey is what stood out.

International recognition came along with L’Île des morts by Benjamin Nuel, which won the Lion for best VR story (linear content) at the Venice International Film Festival in 2018. « That changed the film’s path, it was then selected in more than 50 festivals around the world, but it also changed how we were seen by the field’s professionals », she points out.

The producer would also like to work more with female creators and directors, and transcribe the feminist combats she supports on a personal level, being a member of the 50/50 collective for example.

    She produced Meet Mortaza by Joséphine Derobe, a work shown at Cube, in Issy-les-Moulineaux, and selected for the PiXii Festival, in La Rochelle.

The Institut français and the artist

Oriane Hurard is one of the residents of the 2018 edition of the writing residency dedicated to immersive narratives initiated by the Institut français and the VR Arles festival with her project Je suis un cœur d’artichaut (Tinder Is The Night).
