Built in 1992 by architect Kunio Kato on Kyoto's Higashiyama mountain, Villa Kujoyama is the first French multi-disciplinary artistic research residence to be established in Asia, with the aim of strengthening intercultural dialogue between France and Japan. Villa Kujoyama laureates are expected to establish working relationships with professional, academic, artistic and cultural circles in Kyoto, the Kansai region and the entire archipelago. To do this, they can draw on the Villa Kujoyama team, collaborations forged with the Japanese network in academic, cultural and scientific circles in Japan, and the French cultural network in Japan made up with Villa Kujoyama of the 5 branches of the French Institute of Japan (Fukuoka, Kyoto-Osaka, Tokyo, Yokohama, Okinawa), the 4 Alliances françaises (Nagoya, Sapporo, Sendai, Tokushima), and a Research Institute (Tokyo).

In 2027, Villa Kujoyama will host around fifteen laureates for research residencies, lasting between four and six months.

Applications can be submitted by candidates in solo, in binomial, or in duo Franco-Japanese. The selection process involves experts and professionals in each of the disciplines concerned.

Villa Kujoyama is open to established artists, creators and scientists working in duo or pair with artists, who have an original and singular research project requiring a period of immersion and research in Japan. This project must necessarily present a link with local issues and be capable of sparking an active dialogue with the local players encountered.

The IFPROG application platform will open on February 03, 2026 and will close as soon as 250 applications have been received.

Call for entries 2026

Each year, some 15 artists and designers are welcomed for 4 to 6-month residencies, in a privileged setting with all the resources at their disposal to carry out research. Each winner benefits from a 64m2 studio and has access to the common areas of Villa Kujoyama. These research residencies enable laureates to develop their projects with no obligation to produce. During their stay in Japan, Villa Kujoyama laureates are accompanied by a dedicated team. Every first Thursday of the month, Villa Kujoyama opens its doors to enable artists to share their work with the Japanese public and professionals. Each year, artists from Villa Kujoyama take part in the Nuit Blanche Kyoto.

An information webinar is organized to present Villa Kujoyama's residency program, its selection process and answer questions from applicants. To participate, candidates are invited to register.

Evaluation criteria

1 - Excellence of career (5/20)

Villa Kujoyama emphasizes the excellence of its artists and the multidisciplinary nature of its program.

Study of CV, artistic portfolio and letters of recommendation attesting to the artist's career and recognition by the art scene to which he or she belongs (artistic prizes, participation in major artistic events, collaborations with recognized venues).

For candidates in the métiers d'art discipline, mastery of a specific skill is required; any document attesting to this mastery may be attached to the artistic file.

For scientists working in pairs or duos with an artist, designer or creator, a dossier attesting to the soundness of the scientific background and any research conducted in the natural or formal sciences may be attached in place of the artistic dossier.

2 - Excellence and relevance of the proposed project (10/20)

Study of the artistic quality, relevance and uniqueness of the project with regard to the French and Japanese scenes, but also how this project fits into the candidate's artistic career.

The evaluation of the project will be based on the intentions described by the artist. The feasibility of the project will also be assessed, with Villa Kujoyama reserving the right not to host projects it is unable to support.

3 - Need for a residency in Kyoto (5/20)

Villa Kujoyama works for intercultural dialogue between France and Japan through the many collaborations forged with the Japanese network in academic, artistic, cultural, craft and scientific circles.

The selected projects demonstrate the need to visit Japan, and Kansai in particular. A working protocol already in place, as well as links already established with Japanese professionals or the artist's demonstrated willingness to meet Japanese professionals, institutions and artists, will be positively evaluated.

The final jury will pay particular attention to inclusion, diversity and gender parity among the selected applications. Projects with an eco-responsible scope are strongly encouraged.

Prize-winner selection body

The pre-selection committee evaluates all eligible applications and makes an initial pre-selection. Meeting in committees by discipline, it interviews the shortlisted candidates, according to the discipline indicated in the application file. It forwards its opinion to the final jury.

  • The director of Villa Kujoyama
  • Sector experts from the French Institute
  • Sector experts from the French Institute of Japan
