Africa 2020

French professionals / Foreign professionals
After ten months of rich and varied programming throughout metropolitan France and the French overseas territories, hundreds of collaborations between French and African partner structures, thousands of events in the arts, sciences and entrepreneurship, the Africa2020 Season drew to a close on 30 September 2021. This project, declared from the outset as pan-African and multidisciplinary, was able to develop its full scope and meet its ambitions despite the constraints imposed by Covid.

An extraordinary Season, in terms of ambition and numbers

This extraordinary Season, inevitably marked by Covid, was nevertheless able to take place, thanks to the work of the Africa2020 Season teams, the Institut français, the unfailing support of patrons and institutional partners, and the creativity of partner organisations in France and on the African continent.

This event has made the invitation to "look at and understand the world from an African point of view" tangible.

Built around thirteen major issues of the 21st century, the Season was based on three pillars: the "Africa2020 headquarters" designed as temporary pan-African centres, "Focus Femmes" giving visibility to women in the arts, sciences and entrepreneurship, as well as an "Education" component with hundreds of educational projects in French schools, the hosting of young Africans in France for a community service mission with partner structures, and the provision to France of educational tools from the eight volumes of the General History of Africa produced by UNESCO.

The Africa2020 Season includes:

210 cities in metropolitan and overseas France

422 partner organisations in France

489 partner organisations in Africa

more than 1,500 events in the arts, sciences and entrepreneurship

350 educational projects in schools

12 Africa2020 neighbourhoods

30 "Focus Femmes" projects

11 African volunteers on community service in France

More than 4 million spectators who attended the events of the Africa2020 Season.

Launched by the President of the Republic, Mr. Emmanuel Macron, and dedicated to the entire African continent, the Africa 2020 Season took place throughout France (metropolitan France and overseas territories) from 1 December 2020 to 30 September 2021.

It was implemented by the Institut français, an operator of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, the state funding body for the Season. The Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and the French Development Agency (AFD) also contributed to the financing of the Season.

It benefited from a Sponsors' Committee chaired by Orange.

General Commissioner: N'Goné Fall
