Biennale of Contemporary African Art

  • Sénégal
From 7 November 2024 to 7 December 2024
The Institut français is an official partner of the 15th edition of the Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art, and is committed to supporting the continent's artistic expressions through the Création Africa program.

The Biennale of Contemporary African Art is a major event for the continent's contemporary art, featuring exhibitions on view for two months throughout the capital Dakar. A professional platform of international stature, the Biennale brings together curators, collectors, gallery owners and journalists from all over the world to discuss contemporary artistic practices on the continent and beyond.

For this 15th edition, Artistic Director Salimata Diop has invited 65 artists from 29 countries to gather around the theme “The Wake, l'Éveil, Xàll wi”. This will be an opportunity to discover new talent and highlight outstanding works that are shaping the African artistic landscape, creating a dialogue between yesterday's world and today's, while remaining attuned to its metamorphoses.

As part of Création Africa, the Institut français is particularly supporting the all-female curatorial team, comprising Biennale curator Salimata Diop and her associate curators Cindy Olohou, Marynet J. and Kara Blackmore, who will present the exhibition “On s'arrêtera quand la terre rugira” (“We'll stop when the earth roars”). This exhibition also gives pride of place to women artists.

The Biennial will also be punctuated by conferences, professional meetings, satellite exhibitions and a program of special projects, including an NFT exhibition presented by Anna-Alix Koffi (Côte d'Ivoire), in partnership with the Institut français and the French cultural network.
