Meeting #1Online talk and Q&A about Manifesta 13 in Marseille

MANIFESTA 13 – The European Nomadic Biennial of Contemporary Art

For its thirteenth edition, the 2020 Manifesta Biennial will be held for the first time in France, in Marseille. Manifesta 13 is made up of three interconnected programmes, developed over the past two years and continually evolving: Traits d’union.s, the main programme, Le Tiers Programme, the education and mediation programme, and the programme of parallel events, Les Parallèles du Sud (with over 80 projects in France's Région Sud).

Manifesta was founded by the Dutch art historian Hedwig Fijen.

The artistic team for the 13th edition of Manifesta includes:

  • The Moroccan exhibition curator Alya Sebti, currently Director of the ifa Gallery in Berlin;
  • The Russian exhibition curator Katerina Chuchalina, based in Moscow where she is currently Director of Programming at the V-A-C Foundation, in Moscow and Venice;
  • The German exhibition curator and artistic director Stefan Kalmàr, currently Director of the ICA in London.

The Institut français is offering a circuit featuring artists on the French scene participating in Manifesta, via digital encounters. These digital talks will be available for playback on the Institut français website.

Different partner venues involved in “Les Parallèles du Sud”, museums, institutions, art centres, FRACs and leading contemporary art establishments in Marseille, in partnership with the city and the Région Sud, will also be highlighted through this virtual FOCUS programme.

The emphasis is on promoting artists from the French – and more specifically Marseille – scene and bringing them together online with international professionals invited by the Institut français and the cultural network around the world.

FOCUS visual arts in figures

FOCUS is a major influence for artistic identification to enrich the programming of foreign partners and to contribute to a better diffusion of French artists.

FOCUS Visual Arts consists of bringing together a delegation of foreign contemporary art professionals for a few days to explore an artistic programme in Paris and around France. Since 2010, they have successfully contributed to:

  • the diffusion of more than 125 French artists
  • more than 100 exhibition projects around the world
  • the invitation of more than 250 international curators in France
